Straddling the boundary between soul-jazz and R&B-ish crossover, Washington on alto and tenor (under the direction of Creed Taylor and utilizing the arrangements of Bob James) puts plenty of feeling into his soulful versions of "Mercy Mercy Me," "Ain't No Sunshine," "Georgia on My Mind," and "I Loves You, Porgy." It is obvious from listening to this music alone that he was destined to be a star.
