Those with casual knowledge of the recording business might want to figure out what it might have cost to make this album, even thinking in terms of 1970s dollars. At this point, Maria Muldaur had had a few big hits and was no doubt considered worth investing in from the record company's standpoint. What listeners have here is a typical example of an over-extravagant mess, something the big labels certainly could be considered specialists in during this era, especially when it came to fashioning projects for female singers. It is a pity in the case of Muldaur, who could no doubt entertain a crowd all by herself with only a tambourine in her hand. Yet at this stage of her career, her biggest records had created an image for her as part of 《the gang,》as in a group of fun-loving session-playing friend pickers, many of them with long hair, beards, and mustaches. Get a few hits and even the biggest stars will want to join the party, and that was also supposedly part of the attraction.
