by Scott YanowThis two-CD set is a logical reissue, combining both volumes (formerly Lp's) of a live performance by Art Blakey and his 1959 Jazz Messengers. Recorded shortly after tenor-saxophonist Benny Golson had left the group, this particular version of Blakey's classic band featured trumpeter Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley on tenor (his only recordings with the band), pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Jymie Merritt and the drummer-leader. Surprisingly Morgan, Timmons and the departed Golson did not contribute any compositions to the set although there are three Hank Mobley songs. In addition, the band performs songs by Thelonious Monk ("Justice"), Ray Bryant, Randy Weston ("Hi-Fly") and Gildo Mahones plus the standard "Close Your Eyes" and two versions of "The Theme." The music falls short of being essential but hard bop collectors will find much to savor on the twofer.
