Pelé, considered the greatest soccer player of all time-Beckham notwithstanding-was the subject of a biographical film, for which this self-titled album stands as its soundtrack. What's rather remarkable, is that the great soccer magician composed and sang the main title theme ("Meu Mundo E Uma Bola") with Gracinha, as well as another selection ("Cidade Grande"). The rest was composed and arranged by Sergio Mendes, and guests Gerry Mulligan playing his trademark baritone, but also Soprano saxophone on "Voltando a Baur." The music ranges from samba, to jazz, to soulful bossa with killer funky keyboards by Mendes. It's a strange and brief set of film cues that holds together surprisingly well as a total package.
