Sharon Kam is a beautiful clarinetist. She has everything you want to hear in a wind player: lovely tone, musical phrasing that always makes the composer's points, a wide range of moods and dynamics--the works. Although Kam speaks in the booklet about her personal approach to Mozart's music, it's still quite stylish and convincing throughout, backed with conviction by the experienced orchestra and conductor, veterans of many recordings. It's a pity that Teldec's ungenerous coupling--a brief, relatively superficial virtuoso concerto by a contemporary of Mozart--makes this a specialist item for clarinet lovers rather than a feast for Mozarteans. Most recordings of the Clarinet Concerto, like the one by Kam's teacher Charles Neidich, include more Mozart.
