Meaghan Smith is from a musical family – her mum played piano whilst her dad was a bass player. She started writing and playing songs with her family but soon found herself overcome with stage fright regularly. Whilst trying hard to get rid of the fear, she recorded two solo albums, and in 2007 had a stroke of good fortune when that record was passed along to industry insiders, which lead her to getting signed for Sire Records (a Warner America subsidiary). This EP with the label is recorded with her jazzy backing band. 　　 　　The general sound is a mix of jazz arrangements, with clarinets and horns being played in a relaxed-sounding manner, with modern pop sensibilities. It sounds like a plausible idea on paper but it just isn’t pulled off all that well. There are just some things that sound like it’s trying too hard to be hip, like on ‘A Little Love’ where some annoying turntable scratching is mixed with a gentle and soothing jazz background.
