简介: A warts and all look at the recording process, though the warts arent particularly ugly or troubling. This is not Coltranes Sun Ship album, its the Sun Ship session, and the music contained on these two discs was later edited by Alice Coltrane into an coherent whole that is,while not one of Tranes best recordings,an important transitional work. You may love Sun Ship, but you may not love hearing how it was made. The issue here is similar to the Complete In a Silent Way Sessions, where you can hear the parts that were assembled into the whole, and the parts are generally inferior to the whole. The advantage of having a brilliant editor like Teo Macero is he can select the strongest music and shape the album. The parts on the Sun Ship Sessions are definitely inferior to the whole, and the listening experience is also inferior.Rather than tack on alternate takes after the complete album, listening means working your way through false starts and incomplete takes and,on the second disc,a lot of meandering, aimless bass soloing from Jimmy Garrison. It is fascinating to hear the musicians make this music, but the reward is musicological rather than aesthetic.
