简介: This is an unusually varied and often breathtaking collection of Getz's work drawn from the years between 1957 and 1971. The centrepiece is the famous "Shine", which might almost be described as Getz's finest ten minutes as it rockets along at 76 bars to the minute. His quintet here includes trumpeter Conte Candoli and pianist Lou Levy, two of the best West Coast musicians of them all. But they are both abashed in the face of the ceaseless torrent of ideas that flows out of Getz. Apart from several variations on his quartet, which takes in pianists Oscar Peterson and Chick Corea, Getz is heard with the stimulating Clarke-Boland Big Band while on "Manha De Carnival" he is backed by Gary McFarland's Orchestra, another big band that had enough originality to stimulate Getz's inventions. The most famous bossa nova hit, "Desafinado" ("It paid to put my kids through school," Getz reflected), has the unforgettable and classic partnership of Getz's tenor and Charlie Byrd's acoustic guitar. --Steve Voce.
