Folk N Roll

简介: by Richie Unterberger In spite of the album's title, and the inclusion of covers of "Turn, Turn, Turn," "Eve of Destruction," and "It Ain't Me Babe," this isn't a folk-rock record. Instead, it's a rather lame, standard Jan & Dean album in which they occasionally peek into folk-rock material. The folk-rock tunes here are either inconsequential, faithful covers or versions delivered with a slight sneer that suggest the duo disliked or, perhaps, felt threatened by the new trend. That's never more obvious than on the "Universal Soldier" satire "The Universal Coward," which is not only politically incorrect, but also unfunny. Other songs, like "I Found a Girl," were just standard mid-'60s L.A. pop/rock; "A Beginning from an End," about the death of the singer's wife in childbirth, manages to possibly exceed "The Universal Coward" in bad taste. "Folk City" is a forced update of "Surf City" to accommodate a different fad. Folk-rock was not suitable for Jan & Dean, whether in earnest or satire, and what's worse is that the pop/rock that was their strong suit is not well served by most of the material on the LP.
