简介: Tool’s first album in 13 years,Tool have confirmed that their fifth studio album, Fear Inoculum, will be released on August 30. It's the follow-up to 2006's 10,000 Days.
Guitarist Adam Jones teased the revelation Sunday via Instagram Story, and the band delivered Monday morning, sharing a typically kaleidoscopic piece of art bearing the band's name and the album's title. You can check it out below.
In the same post, Tool revealed that it will begin taking pre-orders for Fear Inoculum on Wednesday, August 7, with links to the landing page to be shared Tuesday.
Tool has yet to post any clips of the band's new music, but fans got a pretty good taste of two new songs during Tool's spring concert dates. With Tool having arrived on streaming services, it's a good bet that the band will release a single soon.
Drummer Danny Carey joked this winter that the band's new compositions are "definitely too long." And it seems like he wasn't joking.
Jones revealed in an upcoming interview with Guitar World that Fear Inoculum will be as dense musically as any prior Tool album with approximately 85-minutes of music across seven tracks, none of which are particularly radio-friendly in terms of run time.
He added that one track contains a four-minute guitar solo, and that most of the album is in odd meter. He says he even suggested at one point that the band title the album Volume 7, in reference to the time signature used most often.
"I took a picture pointing to the number seven while we were recording, and a lot of the riffs Justin [Chancellor, bass] and I brought in were in seven. You don't really go 'I'm going to write a riff in seven!'"
While Jones' suggested album title didn't take, he says Fear Inoculum actually evokes the idea in other ways.
"Then Maynard told me about a whole concept he had about the number seven," Jones continues. "We were all like, 'Oh my God! This is too weird!' Then [visual artist] Alex Grey basically said the same thing and he has a concept that will reveal itself through video."
The number 7 could also have another level of significance to Fear Inoculum. If you include the Opiate EP, Fear Inoculum will be Tool's seventh studio release of all-original music since 1992.
