In Ljus i mörker – Light in darkness, Ulv performs music from the darkest time of the year. The Christmas story is heard, as well as a prayer for the coming new year. The closing ballad tells the story of Staffan, Herod’s stableboy. This winter music is both joyous and reflective, inspiring our personal interpretations. 　　 　　Swedes have lived in both Estonia and Ukraine for centuries where they have maintained the older musical traditions. The hymnal from 1695 and the Reval songbook from 1767 were in use as late as 1910. Both Swedish Radio and Swedish Song Archive have recorded and collected versions of the old hymns. 　　 　　The fiddle, kantele and gussli provide improvisatory accompaniments to the single-line song melodies. We also play traditional folk tunes, composed tunes in traditional forms, and improvisations over hymn melodies. We bring our experiences of performing medieval music to this repertoire which, although written down in the 19th century, has elements of long ago.
