简介: Sagebrush Rebellion is a bold and breezy new album that showcases flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny at his melodic, lyrical best.
Featuring the formidable west coast rhythm team of pianist Nick Manson, bassist Justin Grinnell and drummer
Duncan Moore, Matheny’s album delivers a lively mix of fresh original works, jazz classics by Johnny Burke and
Duke Ellington, and favorite tunes by Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow and Nat Adderley.
A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of
jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following, touring extensively
throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, traveling to 19 countries. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.”
With over 60 recordings in his discography, Sagebrush Rebellion is Dmitri's tenth as a leader.
“This is my kind of album,” Matheny says, “a relaxed, swinging session with a few good friends who also happen to be
great musicians. It's thrilling to make music with such tastefully inventive improvisers as Nick, Justin and Duncan. Like Art
Farmer used to say: if you're the smartest cat in the room, you're in the wrong room!”
Jim Merod, director of BluePort Jazz, agrees. “This is one of my favorite recordings,” he says. “I hope listeners enjoy the
depth and delicacy of these songs crafted with Dmitri’s flugelhorn mastery.”
