简介: In 2010, some never released recordings of Trío Los Paraguayos were discovered in the archives of the German radio. They were original recordings of October/November 1954 and were probably made as a demo or for radiobroadcast purposes.
The trio (Agustín Barboza, Luis Alberto del Paraná and Digno García) came to Europe in 1954 to create awareness for their music on the continent. Their first album would be released in the winter of 1954/55 on Philips. This 25 inch record (Paraguayan Songs, Philips P 10403 R) was released in the spring of 1955 in many countries, including the Netherlands. It is unknown who the producer has been at the time, but the cover was designed by Leo Boudewijns, while the recordings were made in Brussels (De Stoofsteeg , Rue de l' étuve).
The recently discovered recordings were made in Cologne about two months before. Beside some familiar work, they also played a number of songs that were never published ever after. The trio was in the Cologne studio on October 14 and November 23, 1954 and recorded 8 tracks. Just before the release of their second album (Paraguayan Songs no. 2, Philips P 10405 R) they went back to the studio in Cologne and recorded another 5 songs (16 May 1955). It remains unclear why they went back to Cologne and what the intention was of this total of 13 songs. As far as we know no one has ever looked back at them. In the autumn of 1955 they once again recorded an album (Bajo el cielo del Paraguay, Philips P 10113 R), now produced by Melle Weersma, who would also produce many subsequent albums. These recordings were made in Brussels, in the same studio as the previous albums. On that record they used an orchestra, conducted by Luis Marechal.
Meanwhile, the original trio fell apart in May 1956. Each went their own way: Luis formed a new group with his younger brother Reynaldo Meza and two other friends (Rubito Medina and José de los Santos González). This quartet recorded an album in December 1956, in the Apostolic Church in Hilversum (Tropical Trip, Philips P 10119 R).
The Cologne recordings were rediscovered when cleaning up the archive. After they were aired once, the tapes ended up with me. And now, exactly 60 years later, they appear on CD for the first time, completely polished. When digitalizing, I preserved as much as possible of the original sound. This means that no effects have been added (such as reverb, compression or delay) and also the original sound has not changed. The sound is much more dynamic, and the recording has gotten more clarity. It will be a treat for many Los Paraguayos lovers to obtain these wonderful authentic recordings. A new, previously unreleased album after exactly 60 years! The old trio recorded 26 songs on Philips, spread over three albums and a 78-rpm record. From today on we can add 13 recordings to their rich oeuvre!
