His musical influences are vast, but as a singer-songwriter he is known for his way with words and melodies, which conjure up the American musical landscape in the tradition of literary songwriters such as John Prine, Tom Waits, and Leonard Cohen. His songs and stories touch on everything from the difficulties of love to the people and places along old Route 66, or a carnival from his childhood, swing tunes reminiscent of Tin-Pan-Alley—folk, blues, bluegrass, americana, gypsy jazz, in a wide range of CDs released over the last 30 years. 　　 　　David has also spent decades studying the passionate guitar work of the famed gypsy swing instrumentalist, Django Reinhardt and the violin of Stephane Grappeli. His band, DAVELLIE, specializes in that infectious music from the 1930s, where he weaves his own songs into the mix. In the past, David originally grew up in the Midwest and has recorded and toured with people such as Greg Brown and Jethro Burns (of Homer and Jethro fame). David has played at festivals in North America such as Vancouver and Winnipeg, where he has been recognized as both a songwriter and top-notch instrumentalist on guitar, violin, and mandolin. 　　 　　Also a working cartoonist, David's work appears around the world through Carlton Cards and Soultrader of London as well as magazines and newspapers in the US (he was a longtime regular at the Chronicle of Higher Ed out of DC) .David has published a number of children’s books with Alfred A. Knopf, fiction with and Ghost Road Press, as well as short stories and poems. His last book is THE TRICKSTER BRAIN: NEUROSCIENCE, EVOLUTION, AND NARRATIVE, published by Lexington Press. He holds a Ph.D. in English, and he has been a writer in residence at a number of colleges and universities in the US . He has also written and recorded ALA and NAPPA award-winning albums for children, and he is was the songwriter for the new PBS children’s show The Big Green Rabbit, for which he won an Emmy in 2009. Animated videos of his songs from the series on YouTube have over 80 million hits, and the "Rhino Song" has been an important song in the anti-poaching movement in South Africa. Recently featured on NPR, this song was carried by two rangers for 2,000 through the bush to villages, teaching people about the anti-poaching of rhinos.
