简介: Hunters, Run! are basically a vocal band, but one that employs a loud and expansive musical background. Formed in late 2004, after a chance meeting between songwriter Larry Hess and drummer Nelson Colon in a downtown strip club, the band started as a recording project in Nelson’s basement in Brooklyn. Hess brought in some songs he had been working on since the breakup of his last band (NYC instrumentalists The Feud) and the two fleshed them out during late night drinking sessions. The results were encouraging and the two decided to put together a live band. Midwestern noise-rocker/hell-raiser Steve Shodin accepted an invitation to join the new band after seeing Hess perform solo at the Brooklyn dump “Trash”. Shodin’s powerful rock vocals were a perfect fit with Hess’s laconic and wry vocal style. Dan Fodera, a childhood friend of Larry’s and also a fellow writer as well as an actor (he is currently putting the finishing touches on his one-man play “The Dangina Monologues”), was recruited to play bass and add his rich voice to the fray. The band began working on the songs that Larry and Nelson had recorded and on new material that Larry was bringing in. By the time they played their first show the band had expanded to include former metal head (pictured on the promo cd label in his pre-H,R! days) and traveling nomad, Doug Fallone on percussion and random banging noises, as well as Seth Diamond, former member of The Feud on keys. In December of 2005 the band entered Soundworks Studio in Manhattan. Four months of splitting time between Soundworks and their own studio in Brooklyn yielded this tremendous album. Seemingly disparate musical ideas come together in sweet unity throughout Broken Sounds. Hard guitars mix with tender harmonies. Pumping rhythms mix with catchy melodies and passionate, literate lyrics. Earnestness and biting wit walk hand in hand. Hess’s songs range from post-punk stomp to achingly touching ballads. Hunters, Run! find the middle ground between Husker Du, David Bowie, and XTC while maintaining a consistency and cohesiveness that is truly their own. Lyrically most of these songs are works of fiction with distinctive storylines. Characters such as bar prowling pranksters, elderly adulterers and drunken funeral goers make appearances throughout the album. The band handles each change in mood and musical style deftly and with an extremely unique edge. If you believe variety is the spice of life, you cannot help but to be enchanted by this intense, confident and wildly creative record.
