RARE EARTH!
Exciting, thrilling, exhilarating! These are some of the words expressed by loyal fans all over the world after witnessing a Rare Earth concert.
Rare Earth has been an established name in the music industry for over three decades, and their history is one full of incredible uniqueness—with a sound all their own that seems to hold audiences intensely captivated wherever they play.
It all started back in 1957 when a bunch of young boys from Detroit got together and formed a band called The Glo-Worms. At the time, one of the two sax players in the band, Gil Bridges, was driving a hot new 1956 Ford Sunliner. The boys decided that The Glo-worms didn’t cut-it as a cool sounding name; henceforth, the band was renamed after Gil’s car—the Sunliners.
From 1961 through 1968, the Sunliners played the club circuit in Detroit, Michigan.
In the year of 1968, once again, the guys decided a new name was needed, and the Sunliners evolved into the now legendary—RARE EARTH. The band signed a one-record deal with Verve (Dennis Coffey producing), an MGM subsidiary. Shortly thereafter, they signed with Motown—which gave Rare Earth their own record label, calling it Rare Earth Records. This convinced the band that Motown was very serious about making Rare Earth a success.
Rare Earth released nine albums in a ten-year period, and has garnered nine charting hit singles including five top-twenty hits. Classic singles like “Get Ready,” “I Know I m Losing You,” “Born To Wander,” “I Just Want To Celebrate,” and “Hey Big Brother” are still resonant with audiences worldwide. Albums like "Get Ready" and "Rare Earth In Concert" have gone multi-platinum and are still selling today. The albums "One World," "Ecology," "Willie Remembers" and "Ma" have also reached platinum status.
Rare Earth’s many historical performances have gained for them the notoriety of being one of America’s finest classic bands of all time. Some of those venues include: The Atlanta Pop Festival, and The California Jam. These huge festivals hosted thousands, and lasted for days.
Rare Earth has shared the stage with many well-known, great acts such as: Deep Purple, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Earth Wind and Fire, Jimmy Hendrix, Eric Burdon and the Animals, War, Sly & The Family Stone, Ike and Tina Turner, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Blood Sweat & Tears, The Allman Brothers, Three Dog Night, and countless others.
Rare Earth, which still features original member, Gil Bridges, has performed thousands of concerts throughout the years and has been featured on top-ranking television programs like "The Ed Sullivan Show," "The David Frost Show," "Dick Clark’s American Band Stand" (3 times), "Wolfman Jack’s Classic Rock Show," and "Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert." They were also the first band to perform live on the initial broadcast of the classic "Midnight Special" television show instead of lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks.
Rare Earth consists of original member Gil Bridges, (sax, flute, lead and background vocals), Floyd Stokes, (lead vocal and drums), Randy Burghdoff, (bass and vocal background), Ivan Greilick, (guitar, lead and background vocal), Michael Bruner, (keyboards).
Rare Earth still performs worldwide to very enthusiastic audiences—bringing standing ovations for their trademark blend of rock, pop, soul and funk—to this day! They recently released their new CD entitled "A BRAND NEW WORLD."
The reviews are coming in with howling quotes of: “Rock on Rare Earth!” “A BRAND NEW WORLD is fantastic, and astounding; Rare Earth has done it again!” “Hats off to you Rare Earth!” “When I hear “Dancer” I can’t sit still" “The Love You Save” sends me up the wall with excitement.” A fan from the UK writes: “BRILLIANT!!!!!! The opening track “The Love You Save” kicks off the album in fine style and after that it just gets better with the flow. The hair on the back of my neck stood up on hearing “Give Me Shelter” I really can say honestly that every track was worth playing! Great production from Ivan and top playing from all are kept in line with the trademark brilliance of Gil's sax. Rare Earth has come up with something special here, not least with the fact that the writing combination of Ivan and Floyd Stokes, have injected new life in to the band with a quality I had not imagined. To top it all, Ivan and Floyd take on the task of lead vocalist between them. Rock on!”
This is Rare Earth’s first release within the continental United States in over thirty years, and absolutely every song on this CD is filled to brim with the kind of music that will strike a chord in the hearts of devout rock-n-rollers, soul, funk, rhythm and blueser’s everywhere. There is a little bit of everything for whole lot of everyone in "A BRAND NEW WORLD." They have followed their own suit—and done it again. Another huge hit for sure; and it’s only the beginning. Rare Earth is setting up the equipment for more releases in the future.
