In late January of 2010 we convened to record this music. All of us had played many gigs together, but never as a quartet. There are two separate trios within the band, both represented here. Our repertoire has evolved over time and all the pieces we recorded were performed without rehearsal and mostly in one take.
The Music
Two compositions by Thelonious Monk and two compositions by Wayne Shorter are included. These pieces are touchstones in the mainstream of great jazz repertoire. McCoy Tyner has always represented, to me, the ultimate in jazz expression. His song here is reminiscent of orchestral music. The standards Like Someone in Love and Prelude to a Kiss are richly melodic vehicles to feature the ballad playing of Adam Niewood. Falling Grace by Steve Swallow was a part of the repertoire of the Gary Burton group of which I was a member 1969 to 1972.
The Band
Adam Niewood has been my constant musical associate for 12 years. He is a fine composer and recording artist in his own right. Pat Bianchi and Chris Higgins were both introduced to me by Adam. Pat is prominent on the jazz scene these days, with many gigs and recordings to his name. Chris, with his impeccable time and intonation and his solid soloing, provides the basis of our conversation. I look forward to any and all opportunities to make music with these great musicians.
