Ernest Ranglin is a legend. One of ska music's pioneers, he continues to forge new sounds by cross-pollinating jazz, reggae and ska. Each song in this collection is crafted from a mix of African, Jamaican, blues, and jazz lineage. There's a late forties bounce most connected with Charlie Parker's be-bop inventions; a bit of island calypso, reggae and ska in each sonic article. 　　 　　The ten compositions in this recording reflect Ranglin's lifelong musical interests and experiences and their many influences. Tunes like 'Step So Frantic' recall the slow burn of African-American gospel and soul; 'Skadela', the Afro-Cuban connection; 'Wy Fly' swing jazz elements; and 'Half Step', be-bop influences. 　　 　　The musicians who helped bring this project to fruition include some of the finest in Toronto, and it was amazing to see how Ernie inspired the artists to bring their very best to the album. He is a light-hearted, nimble-fingered musical genius, and his spirit shines through in each and every one of these tracks.
