简介: Keith Scott was born in York, PA and graduated from West Chester University near Philadelphia with a B.S. in music. During his senior year, Scott was awarded the annual Down Beat Magazine scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston for his big band arrangement of “Here’s That Rainy Day.” Keith’s first full time gig was during the summer between his sophomore and junior years of college. He played the Hammond B-3 organ at a large bar called Sid’s Tavern in Cape May New Jersey. It was a rigorous schedule of 7 nights and two matinees a week with his jazz quartet and female singer. Late that summer, his band was the warm up group for a large Louis Armstrong concert in Cape May. The following summer took him to the Catskill and Pocono Mountains with the Fred Bevin band where he played piano for dancing and backed up show acts. During his senior year, as leader of the university jazz ensemble, Keith met and became friends with Woody Herman, who allowed him to take arrangements from his book to copy and return the next day when Woody’s band played Friday and Saturday nights at a club in Chester called The Stardust Lounge. This was the same year the great Phil Woods came to the West Chester University for a rehearsal and concert with Keith’s university big band, the “Criterions.” Scott also got to play several gigs with Michael Brecker, who was only fifteen at the time. After college, during his three years of teaching music in the public schools, Scott also held the job of music conductor for music and comedy acts at the Downingtown Inn. This gig was six nights a week, and it was there that he performed with John Raitt and his daughter Bonnie, Robert Klein, Jerry Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and many others. Following that gig, Scott formed a guitar, organ, drums trio that played and sang mostly rock and pop music from 1973 till 1976. They held the house band gig at the South Philadelphia Hilton, and were called “The Windjammers.” An LP of mostly Keith Scott originals was recorded by this band in 1975. This year also found Keith teaching jazz piano and keyboard harmony at the renowned Wilmington Music School in Wilmington, DE. With the Tampa Bay area as his base from 1976-2000, Keith performed regularly around the state with a show band called “Griffith, Smith and Co,” several jazz groups, and his piano bar shows. These years also included a 3 month stint at Frenchman’s Reef in St. Thomas, 3 summers at the Jersey Shore and Philadelphia, and six months in Nashville in 1997. During his Nashville stay, Keith studied songwriting with several hit writers and attended seminars with Pat Pattison from Berklee College. Keith wrote songs for Shara Johnson (Warner Bros. Records) and Raymond Harris (Tamara Records). Harris’ cut didn’t come until 2001. After 6 months in Nashville, it was back to Florida for a 3 year stint at his favorite piano bar on Indian Shores beach called J.D.’ s. A one month vacation in Hawaii in 2000 brought immediate job offers, so seeking some adventure and a change of scenery, Keith and Carol sold their property in FL and moved to Waikiki Beach in May of 2001. While performing his single act 2 nights a week and playing with the top convention and jazz groups in Hawaii, Keith recorded his Jazz CD called “Waikiki,” with Ernie Provencher on bass, and Chuck James on drums. The release of this CD on Eroica Records in April of 2004 was followed by a well received tour of Japan‘s excellent jazz clubs in 2005. In January of 2015, Keith and Carol relocated to Ensenada, MX and are living there full time. Keith can be reached at kthscott40@gmail.com.
