After several years of hard DAW labor and live hardware explication in the low-key but hyper-fertile music/art community of Gainesville, FL, John Wright is releasing his debut full length Partial Object on Elestial Sound, a label he helps run with a few close friends. The album traverses a variety of sonic landscapes from hard minimal techno to ambient new-age to goofball IDM and beyond while still feeling cohesive. Recorded and tinkered with over the course of five plus years, the nine tracks were assembled mostly from sections of long improvisations extracted and collaged into dense cinematic arrangements. The title “partial object” loosely references themes in psychology and philosophy such as desire and alienation and how they relate to certain musical forms especially in house and techno. It also conveys the strange feeling of lingering dissatisfaction inherent in “finishing” a piece of work that is never really finished tempered by the absolution of accepting certain imperfections and unintentionalities as essential to it, adding something new and magical beyond the initial vaguely conceived expectations and idealizations.
