Math rock collective Elephant Gym’s brand new album World will be available in December 14th, 2023. World is the ten year anniversary album with Elephant Gym working with talented musicians from all over the planet. “Name” sees a collaboration with bassist Seiji Kameda (of legendary Japanese act Tokyo Incident) and a first duo bassists arrangement for Elephant Gym. Past album tracks like “Galaxy”, “Light”, and “Ocean in the Night” now get new versions with the help of Kaohsiung City Wind Orchestra while Hom Shen-Hao returns for vocal duty in “Ocean in the Night.” “Feather” enlists songstress ?te and Tendre from Japan for their particular takes of song writing and vocals, pairing different songs with the same music in search for the unique energy a collaboration can bring along the way. “Happy Prince” is based on the Oscar Wilde tales of the same name, now a cut to the chase rock track featuring Yi-Le Lin (of Freckles) 1. “Feather” (feat. ?te) With the vocal help of Golden Melody Award winner for Best New Artist ?te, her vocal chop strikes a balance of the sultry and the soft as if the wings of freedom – light and airy yet full of strength to soar into the sky. 2. “Adventure” A teamwork of instruments involves fuzzy bass notes with delicate guitar sound while the drumming keeps the momentum rolling. This is an instrumental track aims to present new life coming out of chaos 3. “Flowers” Reverting back to math rock, a joint interplay of vocal, subtle hi hat and bass notes. A mid-song tempo change alongside the chord progression serves as the icing on the cake. 4. “Name” (feat. Seiji Kameda) Elephant Gym’s first attempt in duo-bassists arrangement with musical guest appearance from Seiji Kameda (of Tokyo Incident). The musical dual between KT and Kameda, two stylistically different bass players showcasing their back and forth interplay with each other. Kameda believes that names often serve as references points for things of great importances. The song title comes from the coincidence that both bass players picked the name of each other during this project. 5.”Galaxy”- orchestra version. (feat. Kaohsiung City Wind Ensemble) “Galaxy” first appeared in Elephant Gym’s 2013 EP Balance, a song in which strong instrumental play of tempo and melody present a vast galaxy made up of interconnected oceans of stars. For the 10th anniversary version, Elephant Gym teams up with a wind ensemble from their hometown, further improve upon the vast sound scope of the original with musical reinforcement of brass and wood-wind instruments. 6. “Light” - orchestra version (feat. Kaohsiung City Wind Ensemble) Originally appeared in Elephant Gym’s debut album Angle, this new take sees flute takes on the leadoff duty, with brass and wordless vocals coming on deck to form the back and forth of different sound frequencies, like series of lights coming along in the dark, presenting the path toward a fantasy land. 7. “Ocean in the Night- orchestra version (feat. Hom Shen-Hao and Kaohsiung City Wind Ensemble) Yet another cut from the 2013 EP Balance, the song gets a strong vocal contribution from Hom Shen-Hao (of punk act Touming Magazine). Hung returns for the anniversary version, now with an orchestral upgrade, results in a much grander sound courtesy of brass and wood-wind instruments and a new quintuple meter arrangement. 8. “Happy Prince” (feat. Yi-Le Lin) Lin is a Golden Indie Music Awards winning vocalist and front woman of Freckles. Known for her sharp yet emotional lyrics and songwriting, “Happy Prince” starts with lighter vocal and bass notes joining hands before assuming a harder, more rock oriented identity. This is a modern reinterpretation of the Oscar Wilde tales of the same name. 9. Feather (feat. TENDRE) Elephant Gym brings the challenge to their international collaborators while mostly staying true to the original song arrangements. ?te takes on the track in English, while TENDRE brings a unique Japanese language take to the table. It is always interesting to see how languages can present different characteristics and musical identities to an original song.
