While not definitive or as comprehensive an introduction as Columbia's 16-track The Collection, Sings the Blues is still a solid single-disc entry into the music of Bessie Smith, with classic performances including "Dying Gambler's Blues," "Nashville Women's Blues" and "The Yellow Dog Blues."
