Doug Petty is a classically trained pianist, arranger and composer living in Los Angeles.
A top call session player, he has recorded and performed with many of today’s biggest artists including Rihanna, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Enrique Iglesias, Tears for Fears, Roseanne Cash, Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Westlife and the Backstreet Boys to name a few. He has also been featured on the soundtracks of many successful movies including Moonrise Kingdom, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Happy Feet, Hancock, Horton Hears a Who, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and many others. He works regularly with Oscar-nominated film composers John Powell and Theodore Shapiro.
Doug’s signature sound and vision has been instrumental in producing records for numerous artists including Grammy Award-winning singer songwriter Shawn Colvin (“Holiday songs and Lullabies”/ Sony) and the last two records from Tony Award-winning artist Audra McDonald (“Build A Bridge” and “Go Back Home”/ Nonesuch). In 2009, he produced a number of tracks with legendary acts, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and The Wild Magnolias for the Nonesuch release “Our New Orleans”. This benefit album raised over a million dollars for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. In 2012, he co-produced “A Fathers Lullaby” for Nick Lachey.
His string arrangements as well as his keyboard playing and programming have been featured extensively in the work of Hong Kong artist GEM, currently one of the most popular artists in both Hong Kong and China.
As a composer Doug has written for a number of major motion picture trailers as well. Most recently his music can be heard in the trailers for releases “Black or White” and “ Best of Me”.
His symphony orchestra arrangements have been performed all over the country by groups such as the Boston Pops, The Pacific Symphony, the San Diego Symphony and The Cincinnati Symphony. He also created custom orchestral arrangements for Rihanna for her 2007 breakout performance on the American Music Awards.
Recently, he was the keyboardist and programmer for the musical TV shows “The Next” and “Oh Sit”, both on the CW network. He was responsible for programming and arranging music for the wide variety of artist and contestants that regularly performed on the shows, as well as appearing and performing on “The Next”. In addition, he was a contributing arranger for the hit NBC show “Americas Got Talent”.
He is currently a member of the internationally acclaimed, multi-platinum selling group Tears For Fears. He is also the musical director for American Idol /Smash star and Sony recording artist Katharine McPhee.
Doug graduated from the esteemed music conservatory Eastman School of Music where he studied piano performance, orchestration and arranging.
Doug lives in Toluca Lake with his two daughters, Isabel and Olive and wife, Ellen.
