Composer, conductor, arranger, producer of Grammy award winning albums and world touring jazz pianist – Peter Nordahl has no problem keeping busy. In the beginning there was jazz; bebop. Peter travelled the world and cut successful albums with his eponymous trio, the “Peter Nordahl Trio.” They forged collaborations with musicians and singers such as James Moody, Steve Grossman, Stacey Kent and Lisa Ekdahl. As a producer, Peter has explored the world of jazz, bossa nova, classical, musical theatre and pop, working with artists such as Bernt Rosengren, Gunnar Bergsten, Lisa Ekdahl, Marie Bergman, Myrra Malmberg, Mikael Samuelson, Sarah Dawn Finer, EMD, Orphei Drängar and the Gothenburg Opera. Several of the albums that Peter has produced have been nominated for Grammys, and his collaborations with Bergsten and Rosengren both brought home the coveted award. Peter has also produced a couple of albums with his trio and Lisa Ekdahl on vocals that are, to date, the best sellingest Swedish jazz recordings internationally. In 2009 Peter produced Sweden’s top selling cd of the year, “Välkommen Hem” with pop sensation EMD. Ever wishing to delve deeper into the world of music, Peter found himself increasingly writing symphony orchestra arrangements for, among others, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gothenburg Opera, the Malmö Opera and for international recording artists such as Il Divo. He pursued his deepening interest in the world of classical music and the orchestra by taking private classes in conducting for professor Lars Benstorp and classes at the Royal Academy of Music in Malmö for Patrik Andersson. Peter has conducted the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, the Malmö Opera Orchestra, Stockholm Session Strings and a plethora of session orchestras within his various producing commitments. Peter returned to school in 2008 when he decided to pursue a Master Degree in Composing for film at the Royal Academy of Music in Malmö under the tutelage of Hans Gefors. 2009 saw the premiere of two of his compositions: “The Ocean is a Many Coloured Thing, Louise” for The Malmö Symphony Orchestra and “A Love Supreme for John” for the Swedish Wind Ensemble under Christian Lindberg. In the same year Peter composed the music for Swedish Television’s hit series “Vid Vintergatans slut” (“At the end of the Milky Way”) recorded by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, premiering January 2010. Peter has served as MD for two productions of “West Side Story,” one at Dalhalla and the other at Stockholm’s China Theatre in 2006. Also at the China Theatre, in 2008, Peter served as Musical and Artistic Director for “Jekyll and Hyde – the Musical.” Peter has directed, filmed and scored two short movies for Swedish Television: “The Trumpet” and “Bass Trash.” He has been a soloist in Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with the Umeå Symphony Orchestra and for the Swedish Radio. Another Gershwin piece, “An American in Paris”, was revamped by Peter for solo piano and performed by him in the Royal Dramaten Theatre’s production of the same name. Arietta Discs, the outstanding indie jazz label, is one of Peter’s most longstanding projects. Originally started in 1994 together with Patrik Boman, Arietta Discs has collected Grammys and awards and fans from all over the world. In 2010 Peter has been very busy composing, producing, conducting and writing arrangements for recordings and concerts. He has produced a handful of albums: Norwegian singer/songwriter Rikke Lie’s acoustic pop debut for Universal; EMDs Christmas album for Sony Music; Myrra Malmberg’s upcoming symphonic album; Swedish men’s choir Orphei Drängar’s upcoming cd with The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra; and Måns Zelmerlöw’s latest album together with the Swedish jazz elite in a swinging Christmas celebration, released on Warner Music. Peter was the Artistic and Musical Director for Dalhalla’s spectacular fireworks concert where he conducted the Dala Sinfonietta to excellent reviews. Peter has also composed a new piece, “Shades of Green, Shades of Red,” for the Värmland Opera’s Wagner Festival. The world premiere performance will be held on October 7, 2010.
