Both Lucas and Arthur Jussen began taking piano lessons at the age of five with Leny Bettman in Hilversum. Lucas (born in 1993) debuted at the age of nine in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw where he was accompanied by Camerata Amsterdam. During the National Competition of the Dutch Foundation for Musical Talent in 2004, Arthur (born in 1996) was selected Young Musical Talent of the Year. In 2005, the brothers were invited by Portuguese master pianist Maria João Pires to study several months with her in Portugal and Brazil. In the same year, to celebrate the silver jubilee of H.M. Queen Beatrix, Arthur and Lucas gave a concert in the Knight’s Hall that was broadcast live on Dutch television. In 2006, they also played during a concert marking the 50th anniversary of the Princess Beatrix Fund. Under the direction of Jaap van Zweden and accompanied by the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic in the Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Arthur and Lucas played Mozart’s ‘Concerto for Two Pianos’. During the Prinsengracht Concert of 2006, Lucas performed with pianist Lang Lang. In the same year, Lucas and Arthur played key roles in the documentary entitled ‘Help, I have talent!’ that Roel van Dalen made for the AVRO TV. In May 2007, during the twentieth jubilee concert of the ‘Master Pianists Series’ held in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Lucas and Arthur gave a performance of Ravel’s ‘Ma Mère L’Oye’, thus partially substituting for Martha Argerich who had to cancel her appearance at the last minute. In December 2007, the Jussen brothers took master classes with Maria João Pires in Brazil. These master classes were filmed by NHK Japan for a television documentary. At the end of 2007, Lucas Jussen played Chopin’s ‘Piano Concerto No. 2’ in the Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Jaap van Zweden. During the 2008/2009 season, there were performances with The Hague Philharmonic, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and the London Chamber Orchestra (together with Maria João Pires, Arthur played Beethoven’s ‘Piano Concerto No. 1’ and Lucas played Beethoven’s ‘Piano Concerto No. 3’) and recitals in the Herkulessaal in Munich and the Recital Hall of the Concertgebouw. They performed at the opening of the Hermitage Amsterdam in June 2009 in the presence of H.M. Queen Beatrix and the President of Russia. In September, the Jussen brothers played Poulenc’s ‘Concerto for Two Pianos’ during the Saturday Matinee in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw that resulted in a television documentary made by the NPS (Dutch Programme Foundation). Scheduled for 2010 are concerts and recitals in Dallas, Texas (with Jaap van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra) and Italy (Marche Festival). Lucas and Arthur are currently studying with Ton Hartsuiker (20th century music) and Jan Wijn (distinguished piano teacher) and frequently take lessons from Maria Joao Pires.
