5 for Trio is the result of the meeting of the three different but intrinsically linked musical visions of Sylvain Bib St-Onge (guitar), Mathieu Rancourt (upright bass) and Jean-François Gingras (drums). The three musicians first met while in the midst of pursuing music degrees at Quebec City’s Laval University. Inspired by a vast array of musical genres, from classical music to progressive rock, it is, however, through the language of jazz that they have succeeded in melding all of their influences together. Working at first with rearrangements of jazz standards , they soon realized that the best way to incorporate all of their musical ideas would be through composition. 5 for trio’s repertoire is now based largely upon original compositions, inspired by the likes of Ari Hoenig, Neil Cowley Trio, Gilad Hekselman, The Bad Plus and Tigran Hamasyan. While mainly inspired by jazz, the trio never hesitates to insert elements of other genres (rock, metal, funk, reggae, etc.), as long as those elements are useful and aid in a better understanding of the piece. In other words, they try to create a music that will be free of any restrictions that come with labels of genre. All in all, we could say that the 5 for Trio is a genetically modified jazz (GMJ)…
