Marty (1978 Digital Remaster) - Slim Dusty

With the clothes that he stood up in and a smile full of devilment

Marty left the hospital and we wondered where he went

To the nearest bar most likely for I guess he'll never learn

And a few more months and a lot more drinks mean Marty will return

They'll bring him and his flagon in from a barroom floor somewhere

But that's alright with Marty he'd as soon be here than there

For there's no one waitin' home for him she left him long ago

And a boarding house in old Balmain is the only home he knows

For Marty's one of the losers and there's nothing you can do

Marty's one of the battlers and he's been a good mate to you

But life's got a down on him and that's the way it's bound to end

Doesn't seem fair to Marty everybody's friend

He broke every regulation he bent each and every rule

But how it eased the dreary ward routine when Marty played the fool

Oh his knowing grin and ridicule made a pompous man look small

While Marty smiled a handshake made a friend feel ten feet tall

He's the life of every party and he's loved by everyone

But when the party's over and the drinking is all done

What is left of all the laughter where have all the bright lights gone

To a boarding house in old Balmain and four bare walls alone

For Marty's one of the losers and there's nothing you can do

Marty's one of the battlers and he's been a good mate to you

But life's got a down on him and that's the way it's bound to end

Oh it doesn't seem fair to Marty everybody's friend
