I started playing the guitar

oh..seem ???????...emm

Back in 1959,my..eh..My mom and dad gave me my first guitar..

was a little three-quater-size one.

My mom wanted to learn Hawaii music

and...She needed a rhythm guy so...

..That was me...

and..and then my other brothers and sister took up playing instruments as well.

My eldest brother Chris played the drums..

..my sister Verginia played the Hawaii steel guitar.

And my brother Fill who was my closest sibling.

He was the lead guitar player,I was the accompanist.

And I started there..in my musical life..

Doing..what I..I love to do and that is being an accompanist.

And..when I was little learning songs off the radio

and tried to work out what was going on on records.

One of the things that I was not aware of was that

there was a bass guitar on records.

I thought for some reason that the rhythm player covered the bass.

And I will show you what I mean.

So..there was a record by a band called 'The Shadows'

..and the bass part went like this...(Bass..)

And the rhythm went like this...(Ringing..)

What I heard was.....(Bass&Ringing)

And didn't sound like anyone was missing.

(Laugh..)And...

So...(Ringing..)

See it making the sound of the bass as well as the rhythm.

And that's...that's what I thought was..was going on.

And it was kind of a happy accident, because when I got a little older

and I heard Chet Atkins on the radio,

I could hear he was playing everything at once.

And people didn't believe that

they said,"Oh,no.It's a recording trick, don't take any notice to that."

I said,"Oh,no.I think he is playing everything at once..I'll show you how it goes."

And I use my..my straight pick and I work out how to get that.(Ringing...Inro of 'Windy&Warm')

Going like that with the pick, and then I got my fingers playing the melody.

And I had my own little band like this...

<Windy&Warm>.......(Clapping)

So you got the idea anyway, right? (Clapping..Laughing)

So that's how I started the fingerstyle playing with this straight pick.

And then I acrossed was about 11 or 12 years old and I finally saw a photoghraph of..of Chet

and he was playing with a thumbpick on his thumb.I had one of those..haa..moments,you know?

And..So when I got myself a thumbpick was like someone opened the gate and the horse ran out,you know.

So I was off and running, and I've been off and running ever since.

And..So I sure do own Chet so much,he showed so many of us the way...

inspired us seems still does today, what a legacy he left for us.
