简介: "The eldest of the Heath Brothers and founding member of the Modern Jazz Quartet, Percy Heath has played or recorded with virtually every jazz legend, among them Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, and Dizzy Gillespie. Yet despite his pedigree and astounding five-decade career, he had never made a recording as a leader...." - Andy Collins
"It's hard to believe that the musician with the most beautiful bass sound in jazz has never before made an album under his own name." - The New York Times
"So the question, 'When will you make a recording as a leader?' has been answered." - Percy Heath
"The title track of A Love Song was composed and performed by Mr. Heath three years ago at the memorial service for Milt Hinton, whom Mr. Heath called 'the father of the bass for all of us.' This, in a way, gave birth to Mr. Heath the front man. 'There were 11 of us bassists up on the stage to honor Milt,' Mr. Heath recalled. 'After I played that tune, all the other bass players said, "Oh man, Percy, that's a killer song." Guess I was seen in a different way.' Soon after, Mr. Heath was approached by Andy Collins and Bill Siegel, record producers, who suggested a recording of songs written by the bassist and favorite tunes written by others. Mr. Heath, on bass and cello, was joined in the studio by Jeb Patton on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and his brother, Tootie Heath, on drums and percussion. And so A Love Song, released on the Daddy Jazz label, was born." - The New York Times
"Opening with the solo title track, Heath immediately demonstrates the warm tone, lyrical sense and impeccable intonation that has made him such an in-demand artist on over three hundred recordings, including seminal works with Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and, of course, his group of over forty years, the Modern Jazz Quartet.... With a mainstream program that is as revealing as it is fun, as passionate as it is intelligent, Heath proves why he has, in the course of over sixty years, remained in such high demand. He combines musical integrity with a purely playful nature that makes him a joy to hear." - All About Jazz
"[A] brilliant release... long overdue... the leader has a few surprises in store...." - All Music (****1/2)
