by Greg Prato 　　Heavy and complicated are certainly two fitting descriptions for Spanish extreme metallists Avulsed. For evidence, just give a listen to their 2009 offering (and certainly one of the jollier-titled albums in recent memory), Nullo (The Pleasure of Self-Mutilation). Cookie Monster-like growling, blastbeat drumming, rapid-fire riffing...yep, you know the score. Although by no means exactly original, extreme metal is all about pushing the boundaries of sonics and of good taste, and Avulsed certainly succeed in both categories, as evidenced by such songs (and especially song titles) as "Breaking Hymens," "Maggotfilled," and "She's Hot Tonight (In My Oven)." Also added are covers by two groups that were obviously influences on the Avulsed lads -- Exodus ("Piranha") and W.A.S.P. ("I Wanna Be Somebody"). By golly, "extreme metal" is certainly a fitting description of Avulsed's Nullo (The Pleasure of Self-Mutilation).
