Sistla Janaki (born 23 April 1938), popularly known as S. Janaki, is an Indian playback singer and occasional music-composer from Andhra Pradesh. She is referred to respectfully as "Janakamma". She is one of the best-known playback singers in India and has recorded nearly 48,000 songs in films, albums, TV and Radio including solos, duets and chorus songs in more than 17 languages including those native to India (mainly in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, Odiya, Bengali, Tulu, Malayalam, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Sindhi, Assamese, Konkani and also in languages such as English, Japanese, Latin, Arabic, German, Sinhala, French, Bangla, Russian and Chinese. Starting in 1957 with the Tamil film Vidhiyin Vilayattu, her career has spanned over six decades.   S. Janaki, who is known as "The Nightingale of the South", is a recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Mysore and the Kalaimamani award from Tamil Nadu State Government. She is called Queen of Expressions for her unique ability to express different kinds of emotions and feelings in her songs. Janaki speaks 8 languages and has fans all over India.   In 2013, she refused the offer of a Padma Bhushan award by the Government of India, saying that it had come "too late" and that South Indian artists were not given their due recognition.   A book titled Aalpanathile Thenum Vayambum, authored by Abhilash Pudukad, details the life and career of Janaki. This book on S Janaki has 4 world records (India Book of Records, Record Holders Republic UK, India's world record and Asst World Records) which is the most by any other female singer.
