Sugar Kane Music is the musical home of producer/composer/songwriter John Kane and co-producer, recording engineer and musical cohort Mark Walmsley. ABC Music and Sugar Kane have had a very long association dating back to John’s early production work with Colin Buchanan, Jane Saunders, The Kanes, Anne Kirkpatrick and The Bushwackers for ABC Country during the early 90's. John and Mark have produced and composed songs and music for many releases for the ABC Kids label including a much loved Nursery Rhyme Series culminating in the classic 200 Great Nursery Rhymes for Kids, plus a series of Dance albums including the Gold Record award winning Macarena. A well received series of educational albums followed and more recently they have been the guiding force behind very popular releases by Jay Laga'aia andGeorgie Parker. Along the way they have composed music for the popular ABC TV series Something in the Air and Good Game and composed and produced the music for the latest series of The Fairies and the companion CD and DVD. John Kane’s background is in acoustic roots music and particularly bluegrass. His band the Flying Emus won ARIA awards and several Golden Guitars in Tamworth and were regarded as pioneers of the new country sound in Australia. He is a highly regarded stringed instrument specialist playing guitar, banjo, mandolin, dobro, ukulele and other things with strings. Recently John returned to his musical roots for an album called The Banjo recorded with his Flying Emus partner in crime Ian Simpson. The album has received rave reviews and is nominated for several awards. Mark Walmsley is a talented recording and mixing engineer as well as an accomplished player of piano, synthesisers and all manner of keyboards including the dreaded accordian. Before teaming up with John he produced recordings for Mark Hunter, Glynn Nicholas and worked on several theatre productions. He misspent his youth in several prominent rock bands in the Canberra district. Recent ABC releases to emerge from Sugar Kane Music include Ted Egan’s Saving The Best collection and Jay Laga’aia’s ARIA nominatedI Can Play Anything as well as The Banjo of course. In the works right now is an album of Ukulele music slated for release in early 2012.
