Woodrow Anthony Thomas 11/13/1938 - 4/30/2016 Renowned double bass player and musical trailblazer, died in Tucson of complications from rheumatoid arthritis and kidney disease. Born in Brighton, England during WWII to Elsie and Charles Woodrow, he was evacuated from London to the countryside while his musician parents entertained the British troops. His first marriage was at age 17 to Jennifer Ferguson, with whom he moved to Tel Aviv where he held the post of Principal Bass of Israel Philharmonic. He played under such legendary batons as Toscanini, Beecham, Mehta, Giulini, Rattle, Jansens and Haitink. Later returning to Holland, his search for the historical character of the bass and violone led him to become a key figure in the resurgence of Early Music on original instruments, playing a Gaspar da Salo bass dated 1602. Anthony recorded, performed and toured with Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Bruggen, Anner Bijlsma, Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Dietrich Fischer-Diskau and countless other musical giants, and was considered a pioneer in his field. As a professor at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague and the Amsterdam Conservatory, he was respected not only as a virtuoso, but for his impact as an influential and inspiring teacher, training multiple generations of internationally active bass players. He was Principal Bass of Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the 18th Century, playing his last concert with them in Lincoln Center in 2007. Anthony enjoyed an unorthodox home on a tugboat in Holland. While still in good health he had adventures at his summer cabin in the high country of southern Colorado, chasing wild horses, coaxing "Bubba" the '76 Lincoln, and changing the course of the Blanco River by strategically chucking boulders around. Moving with his third wife Mari to the drier, arthritis-friendly climate of Tucson in his later years, he dedicated himself to writing an d to being an exemplary house-dad and a feisty and loving husband and soul-mate. He was quick-witted, exceptionally wise, and an out-of-the-box profound and innovative thinker who will remain intensely significant to the many who will love him forever.
