Adaline, aka Shawna Colleen Beesley, is a singer and songwriter who blends indie rock with torchy, dark electropop. Born in Ottawa, Canada, she had an itinerant childhood due to her father's work as a minister. A musician from childhood, she was out of touch with current music trends when she started writing songs because pop music was discouraged in her conservative household. When she was exposed to it later, she embraced the idea that her atmospheric, textured style would likely be more suited to film and television than the Top Ten. Sure enough, her early work went on to appear in television series including Grey's Anatomy, 90210, and Lost Girl, and in short films such as 2006's Fool's Gold and 2010's False Creek Stories. A set of noir-ish dance and ambient pop, her self-released debut, Famous for Fire, appeared in 2008. The like-minded Modern Romantics LP followed on Light Organ Records in 2011. Among other soundtrack work, she contributed to songs by Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning and Me&John for the 2013 film The Canyons, and in 2014, the title track to her debut album was featured on the Syfy series Bitten. She had a brush with viral fame when a friend asked her to cover Genesis' "Follow You Follow Me" for her animated film short. When Lily and the Snowman was shown throughout the winter of 2015-2016 by Cineplex theaters in Canada before features, the song was heard by millions of moviegoers and streamed tens of millions of times. Soon after, her song "Keep Me High" appeared in the 2016 film Below Her Mouth. Written on a seaside retreat, her third album, Aquatic, was released by Cadence Records in 2017. ~ Marcy Donelson
