It's rare that you find an artist with the panache of Barney Artist. The East London emcee not only uses A Tribe Called Quest-worthy beats for his canvas, but also spits with an ease that suggests he’s been rapping since diapers. After releasing his debut EP Bespoke last year, he’s back with a new collection of audio art. 　　While at first listen, Painting Sounds sounds like something Starbucks could be playing for their patrons, the lyrics take you deep into Barney’s life, urging the listener towards self-reflection. That might have you questioning why you ordered that Venti-Iced-Ginger-Mocha-Frap instead of going for a jog, or questioning the most personal parts of your romantic relationships. As you vibe with Barney, he’s not afraid to flex his confidence on faster, darker tracks like “Beep Beep Part 2” as well as recount painful conversations with former flames (“Destructive Beauty”). 　　We spoke with Barney about his new project, his love of jazz, and his life growing up in Forest Gate.
