Finnish DJs and producers duo based in Oulu.
TJH87 stands for Timo Juuti Hector 87.
Music, perhaps more than any other art form can be created, spread and enjoyed from the farthest corner of the world to another. Sometimes these corners are populated by the most interesting talent, such as can be found in one small studio built inside a warehouse in northern Finland by a duo known as TJH87. A studio that later became the headquarters of the leading Finnish electronic music label Youth Control.
As with so many great artists and bands, the route to finding their musical identity, such as it truly can be found, was not straightforward for TJH87.Picking up influences, current and almost prehistoric, one at a time TJH87 left behind an intricate trail of singles and EPs slowly approaching their artistic turning point in 2016.
Almost five years earlier, TJH87 had just released ‘I Know It’ which was featured on a Hed Kandi compilation and played on daytime BBC Radio 1 by Fearne Cotton and Chuckie. Off to a good start, they released another simple uplifting disco house tune that drew influences from early filter house called ‘Cheap Bad Moves’ that track was well received and was picked for another Hed Kandi compilation and became their first national radio hit.
Followed soon with ‘Break Away Kicks!’ picking up where ‘Cheap Bad Moves’ left with a hint of French House and a touch of Justice, it was again immediately picked up by major publications such as DJ Mag and Mixmag. After its release, ‘Break Away Kicks!’ went to #1 on the Finnish iTunes Dance Chart in less than week, while also entering Beatport’s Top 100 Indie Dance / Nu Disco chart.
The EP received support from a wide range of DJs, and further radio play on BBC 6 Music, as well as national support from Finnish radio YleX and countless radio stations across Europe, The USA and the Pacific Rim. TJH87 got rave reviews from everywhere with ‘Break Away Kicks!’ being called as “Full On Electrogasm” by Mixmag and the duo as “Daft Punk on crack” by Crack Magazine.
TJH87 continued to evolve and by 2014, TJH87 had given birth to their record label Youth Control, releasing as its debut their track ‘Good Life’ featuring Boston based Gamble & Burke of Kitsuné fame. This explosive Nu-Disco cut filled with funk guitars, big synths and bass, was released with an animated music video and went on to receive global attention from the likes of Quincy Jones’s The Vibe in the US, in DJ Mag, Music Weekly, Discobelle, Do Androids Dance and many others. Further successes followed when ‘Good Life’ hit the #1 spot on the Finnish iTunes electronic single and album charts, and radio playlist spots across the UK, US, and throughout Europe. It was not only the airwaves to get shaken up by ‘Good Life’ but in the clubs too, with DJ support from Steve Aoki, Nervo, Todd Edwards, Plump DJs, Sister Bliss to name but a few.
In 2015, the duo released ‘Lost Into The Night’ EP with title track and a collab with another artist of the Youth Control family, Roisto. ‘Lost Into The Night’ received outstanding support from DJs and radios stations, despite its more chill and indie nature, including Dimitri From Paris, Joachim Garraud, Tommie Sunshine and many more. ‘Lost Into The Night’ also became the first TJH87 single to enter Hype Machine top 20 after being featured on Dancing Astronaut, Indie Shuffle, Ministry of Sound TV & more. In addition to all of this they have worked continuously, producing remixes for the likes of Avicii and Satellite Stories.
In a metaphorical twist of fate after 'Lost Into The Night' TJH87 disappeared into to depths of their studio for almost a year until in may 2016, they sent out a message that the long wait is over and they had finished the new material with the first single of three consecutive releases ‘New Horizons’ released on July 8th. “We sat down, re-arranged our studio, dusted off the old gear and approached the way of making music in a completely different way – the only way to break away”.
