The Viennese soprano Ursula Targler began piano lessons when she was five. After school she studied medicine, before changing to vocal studies. Her most important teachers include Hilde Rössel-Majdan, Erika Werba and Walter Berry. She studied the interpretation of Italian opera with Costas Paskalis. She made her operatic début in 1987 at the Bologna Teatro Comunale and in the same year at the Vienna State Opera Studio. From 1990 to 1999 she worked at the Koblenz Theatre and appeared in guest engagements in Germany and Austria, her principal rôles including Ariadne, Liu, Micaela, Margarethe, Agathe and Rosalinde. In summer 2001 she was awarded the Orpheus Prize of the Bad Hersfeld Opera Festival for her performance as Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio. In addition to appearances in opera, she has an active career in the concert hall and in Lieder recitals.
